This series is a wonderful way to take a deeper look at Enneagram Types and Subtypes. The character of Laura is an exquisite example of the Enneagram Type 4, and in particular the one to one, intimacy driven sexual subtype of 4.

Melissa George and the character she plays is very much like the character that Angelina Jolie played in the movie “Girl Interrupted.” Both are accurate portrayals of the Enneagram Type 4. Laura is the edgy, intense and emotional Enneagram Type that thrives on relationship and focuses on what is missing. Seeking that which is unique and authentic, ‘Laura’ pushes her therapist ‘Paul’ (Gabriel Byrne) to recognize the emotional truth of their deeper feelings for one another. Paul, a sexual subtype of 5, the knowledgeable, thinking Enneagram Type, also seeks intimacy, but from a distance in a more detached and unemotional way. This is a pairing of two opposite types on the Enneagram, both of whom have the instinctual drive to survive by forming deep, intimate bonds. Laura and Paul try to create these bonds through the use of two different centers of intelligence. Laura, the 4 uses her emotional center to manage her world and stressors and Paul uses his mental center to do the same. Both 5 and 4 tend to be inhibited-the 4 due to a painful sense of lack and 5 due to a fear of being engulfed.

Dr. Drew Pinsky is famous as the compassionate and sensible radio advice doctor. On this television show he supports celebrities with addictions at a Pasadena rehab clinic in Southern California. As their guide and mentor, he helps these lost souls find themselves so they can address and begin to heal the painful emotions and circumstances that made them vulnerable to addiction. Patients at the clinic include celebrities with a myriad of addictions both prescribed and illicit.

Dr Drew appears to be the counter-phobic 6 Enneagram Type . 6s are motivated by fear. They feel the need to move away from it or face it head on to overcome their feelings of fear. They also fear being misled or caught off guard and seek support and reassurance from strong trusted others. They are reluctant authorities as they identify with the underdog rather than the top dog. Security comes from being part of one’s chosen group rather than leading a group. Therefore, when a 6 is in leadership, there is a strong need for team building and consensus rather than overt direction.

As we watch Dr Drew work with each individual we can see the high side of the counter-phobic 6. He is heroic and courageous but not too defining or direct. He is in charge but does not take charge. The counter-phobic 6 is usually the one to one, sexual subtype of 6. The approach to life for this instinctual subtype is through pair bonding and intimacy. Dr Drew works his magic by creating trusted one on one bonds with each patient. High functioning, he works in a sincere, intelligent and touching manner. He also shares his own struggles, including various emotional attachments to patients, his discouragement with some, his compulsive need to save all of them, and his feelings of despair at having taken on such a daunting task. The fashion industry is a combination of the Type 7 vision and imagination combined with the Type 3 skill with sales, manufacturing and marketing. Project Runway is a wonderful example of the full spectrum of Enneagram Type 7 . Identifying what is ‘in’ and what is ‘out’ is the strength of the cutting edge, fashion forward movement of 7. There are more fashion designers that are Type 7 than any other type. The three primary judges on the show are Heidi Klum, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia. All three express themselves as 7s. All three use the lexicon and word preferences of Enneagram Type 7 . Type 7 use the words, fun, inspiring, joyful and boring more than any other Enneagram Type. When these three judges like an outfit they will say that it is fun, inspiring and/or joyful. When they don’t like a design they will often say that it is boring uninspiring or unimaginative. Michael Kors has said when commenting on a creation that he didn’t like ” Where is the joy?” or “It lost the joy of being fun.” or “…it looks a little sad.” or “…no sense of smile.” This is quintessentially Type 7. The gift of Type 7 is creative visionary imagination. The fear of Type 7 is of being sad, inferior, trapped, bored, limited or missing out. ‘3:10 To Yuma’-Honor among thieves and the code of Enneagram Type 8

Starring Russell Crowe ( 8 ) and Christian Bale this is a wonderful portrayal of Enneagram Type 8. Russell plays a type 8, outlaw Ben Wade who is leading a crew of thieves and gunslingers. His cool nonchalance in the face of danger, his clear command and constant verbal provocation with a code of honor all his own add up to a master portrayal of type 8 . His men are fiercely loyal, no betrayal is tolerated and is punishable by death. When Ben Wade finds out that rancher Dan played by Christian Bale is truly weak and innocent he begins to protect him even at great personal cost.As we often say, 8s, no matter how bad they may be, (Ben Wade describes himself as black and rotten as hell) are always protecting someone or something. That is the very nature of type 8 . 8s are the black knight… they protect the weak, downtrodden and underrepresented. Here we see Ben Wade protect the innocent even if it means turning on his own crew.Russell Crowe is also playing a sexual subtype of 8. Intimate taunts are a way in which sexual 8s make connection. The way in which Wade speaks of cherished memories sheds light on the hidden, vulnerable side of 8 that can be quite sensitive and maudlin. At one point, Wade says that it is man’s nature to take what he wants. This comment addresses the world view of type 8.The 8 is a ‘bell whether’ type on the enneagram that calls off unspoken, universal truths. Ironically, with the awareness of innate human weaknesses, the 8 is profoundly impacted, and respects the strength of those willing to suffer or die for what they believe in. ‘There Will Be Blood’ Type 5 starring Daniel Day-Lewis

‘There Will Be Blood’ starring Daniel Day-Lewis, is an excellent movie exemplifying the self-preserving subtype with the enneagram trifix of 135. The dominant type is 5 . Most importantly, we can see Daniel as a self-preserving 5 that has given up on faith and love. His external world is matching his internal landscape that is filled with dry, desert-like depression.
